Original photograph Street Flowers began with a photo-taking expedition with my artist friend Joyce down the main downtown streets in beautiful Winter Park, Florida. I focused mostly on the many terracotta planters that contain a variety of flowering plants from daisies to cyclamen. Street Flowers sketch
This sketch was drawn quickly in Photoshop, with the goal being to simplify the forms and try out some color options. The plan is not to reproduce this sketch exactly, but to use it as a jumping off point.
To test out the color scheme and technique,
I made this 8" X 10" study of a small area.

My original idea was to paint the black line on the background fabric, but I've recently been experimenting with sewing together various yarns using fine monofiliament thread. The pot outline is a combination of black ribbon yarn, a black stringlike yarn, and metallic gold embroidery floss. It gives just the irregular, undulating quality I was looking for.

The size was chosen to conform to the entry size for the Collage Mania 2 fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, details here. It was auctioned off in May, 2008, along with many others. To view my 2009 donations, click here and here.

So when will I get around to making a collage of the entire scene? So many ideas, so little time…
